Postgraduate Study

Anthropology Honours

The Honours programme is designed for students who want a further year of specialised study in sociology after completion of their general BA degree and who may also want to lay a foundation for thesis work in Anthropology (within either the MA or PhD programmes). The Honours programme is designed to extend and deepen students' knowledge of their discipline by giving them the opportunity to develop research skills and to work with course teachers in both one-on-one and seminar situations.

Anthropology Masters

Unlike a taught Masters degree where skills are acquired through the combination of taught papers and a short thesis, the Masters degree in Anthropology is a thesis only degree. This means that for a Masters, students are required to submit a thesis of approximately 30,000 words based on independent research completed under the supervision of an academic staff member. A thesis only Masters Degree is designed for students to develop advanced skills by carrying out independent and sustained research.

Anthropology PhD

A PhD is a higher degree by research and it is the qualification which shows that the graduate has the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to work as a professional researcher in their subject area. The PhD is awarded on successful completion of research leading to a thesis.
