Social and Political Sciences

School of Social and Political Sciences

From January 2011 Gender Studies will be offered only at postgraduate level (MA thesis & PhD)

Discontinuation of BA major and minor in Gender Studies from 31st December 2010
It is with much regret that we announce the deletion of the BA Major and Minor in Gender Studies, and as a subject for BA (HONS). While there are a number of reasons for this, the primary one relates to the lack of sustainability of small programmes, particularly those with no designated staff.

NOTE: All students who have enrolled for a minor in gender studies this year will be able to complete this over the next two years.  Students currently enrolled in a major or minor will be able to complete these in 2011 (major and minor) and 2012 (minor). Please contact Tiina Vares if you are in this position.

Gender Studies will be maintained as a pathway in Sociology and in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences more broadly. In other words, students interested in maintaining a focus on gender in their courses can still do so. Although the qualification is being discontinued, the study of gender continues.
All the courses that are GEND coded at present will still be offered under the code of the programme in which they are taught (and possibly some other double-codes), for example (from 2011):

GEND 101: Gender in Focus will be SOCI 115: Gender in Focus
GEND 201: Constructing Bodies will be SOCI 202
GEND 208: Postcolonialism and Identities will be SOCI 210 (also double-coded CULT 205)
GEND 215: Heroines in History will be HIST 255
GEND 225: Psychology, Culture and Society will be SOCI 265
GEND 227: Social Movements will be SOCI 261
And so on…

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any responses, questions or comments.
