Welcome to Health Studies

The School of Social and Political Sciences collaborates with scholars from a range of disciplines, including some drawn from the Christchurch School of Medicine's public health group, to provide the interdisciplinary course: HLTH 101 Health Studies. This second semester course provides students (from all disciplinary backgrounds) with an introduction to the study of health, providing a conceptual and practical ‘toolkit’ with which to study health and related issues.  Issues explored in the course include Maori health, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, adolescent health, health screening, and issues involved in health sector work.  For an understanding of these topics, the course includes concepts of health, examination of health determinants, measurement of health, the geography of health, and health policy.
