Haere mai ki to mātau kāinga hou.

Greetings and welcome to our new home

Social work at UC is now re-established in its new home in the History Building on floors 4, 5 and 6 in the heart of the campus, and now alongside our colleagues in Social and Political Sciences.

To our continuing students – Thank you for your commitment and forbearance on our journey to get here across the choppy waters

To our new neighbours and colleagues – We are looking forward to our neighbourhood relationship

To those of you we are still to meet – We look forward to our relationship with you in social work education

The Human Services and Social Work Department welcomes applicants to its professional programmes. We hope you will find the information provided self-explanatory. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns at any stage of the process as you consider your study options.

The Department’s Social Work programmes combine academic courses with intensive skills development and internship experience in the field. Studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are offered.

The programmes also draw on interdisciplinary studies, including Psychology, Sociology, and Law, to provide future social work practitioners with the skills, knowledge, and personal influence to effect change. Such interventions may be with individuals, families, groups, organisations, or communities, and incorporate a range of social change strategies.

Our Professional Social Work Qualification Pathways provides a useful overview of the programmes, eligibility criteria, application and assessment processes, and outcomes.

Limited entry criteria apply to some social work courses. See our How to Apply pages for further details.

Degree qualifications from the Social Work programmes offered by the Department are recognised by the New Zealand Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB website). Social Work graduates from the Department have a qualification that is of an international standard and are eligible to apply for registration as a social worker in New Zealand.

See our Careers page for more information about the range of career options available to graduates with a degree in Social Work and profiles of graduates in a number of practice settings.
