News
Annabel Taylor (Social Work and Human Services), along with Professor Lori Sudderth (Sociology and Criminal Justice) from Qunnipiac University in Connecticut, USA, has been successful in receiving the Galpin International Exchange Fellowship award, aimed at international exchanges for academics. Lori will be focussing on domestic violence safety plans for women in the US and NZ while Annabel is looking at therapeutic justice in care and protection and domestic violence.
Dr Jane Maidment from Human Services and Social Work has been appointed as President of Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Work (ANZASW). This is the professional association for social workers in New Zealand, responsible for providing and monitoring ongoing professional development, national advocacy on matters of social policy, development and maintenance of ethical standards, underpinned by a commitment to bicultural practice.
The Department’s Social Work programmes combine academic courses with intensive skills development and internship experience in the field. Studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are offered.
The programmes also draw on interdisciplinary studies, including Psychology, Sociology, and Law, to provide future social work practitioners with the skills, knowledge, and personal influence to effect change. Such interventions may be with individuals, families, groups, organisations, or communities, and incorporate a range of social change strategies.
